ELAB NEWS & SERVICES UPDATE – May 2021

ELAB’s GCxGC instrument offers comprehensive two-dimensional chromatography to analyse TPH CWG samples.

This method utilises a two-column set up which enables us to fully separate aliphatic and aromatic fractions, removing the need for traditional manual separation techniques. This gives us better precision and faster turnaround compared to that of a more conventional GC method. This method is MCERTS accredited for specific carbon bandings.

Contact Mike Varley, our Operations & Technical Manager to discuss your TPH-CWG needs on 01424 718618 or email cs@elab-uk.co.uk.

ELAB NEWS & SERVICES UPDATE – February 2021

ELAB were pleased to host the UKAS surveillance team in January for our annual accreditation review under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. This year however, due to COVID restrictions we undertook our first virtual assessment with the team.Documents were uploaded to the cloud for review and real time TEAM sessions were held with staff to review performance and competence.

The decision not to send staff on-site is a risk-based approach and reflected the level of confidence the UKAS team had in ELAB’s systems and our previous performance.

For our full list of UKAS accreditation please visit our website or the UKAS site where you can find us under our full name of “The Environmental Laboratory Ltd”: https://www.ukas.com/wpcontent/uploads/schedule_uploads/00002/2683Testing%20Single.pdf

Please contact Customer Services on cs@elab-uk.co.uk or call on 01424 718618 when your samples are ready for collection.

ELAB are fully operational and ready for all your work.  Another National lockdown is not the best start to the year for any of us but one we have learnt to cope with. There is light at the end of the COVID tunnel, but we have to remain vigilant until we are free of the restrictions.

During this difficult time, we are working to mitigate the effects of staff absence due to infection or self-isolation, and we are working closely with our couriers to ensure collections and deliveries remain on time.

We will inevitably have problems along the way but please bear with us as we solve these issues and provide our usual high level of service and support.

ELAB NEWS & SERVICES UPDATE – November 2020

CONTAMINATED LAND – PHASE 2 STUDIES – ORGANIC CONTAMINATION SUITES OF ANALYSIS.

Post Phase 1 Desk Top Studies, it may still be unclear on the type and extent of the contamination present on site, and the analysis suites that should be scheduled for the Laboratory to undertake

In this situation it would be beneficial; in the case of organic substances contamination; to take an initial non-targeted approach to identify the type and range of contaminants present on site. This screening process can be achieved by undertaking GC-MS-TIC analysis on both soil and water samples taken from boreholes or trial pits.

The mass spectra of any compounds detected are compared with ELAB’s mass spectral library of over 250,000 different compounds to tentatively identify and semi quantitates the organics present. This can be applied to both volatile and semi-volatile contaminants present in the samples; covering groups such as BTEX, fuel oxygenates, petroleum hydrocarbon components, solvents, PAHs, PCBs, phenolics, pesticides, and recently emerging pollutants.

Once the data has been reviewed by the Consultant / Geotechnical Engineer a targeted suite of analysis can be scheduled for the laboratory to undertake; whereby specific compounds in the samples can be identified and quantified using more explicit methods of analysis.

For further information on ELAB’s Volatile and Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC-TIC, SVOC-TIC) Screening service please call Mike Varley on 01424 718618 or email our Customer Services Team at cs@elab-uk.co.uk.

ELAB NEWS & SERVICES UPDATE – October 2020

WALES TO LOCKDOWN BUT CONSTRUCTION KEEPS GOING

Announcing new restrictions, first minister Mark Drakeford for The Welsh Government imposed widespread restrictions coming into effect from 23 October to 9 November. According to its website, people must work from home if they can, but construction may continue on sites under strict compliance with social distancing rules. The only impact on construction there would be reinforced vigilance and compliance.

Construction Products Association, Economics Director, Professor Noble Francis said the housing and infrastructure sectors had the best short-term outlooks. Stating the CPA’s most likely scenario now sees output falling much less in 2020 compared to 2019. This is an improvement due to the quick re-opening of sites after lockdown, social distancing having less impact on productivity than initially feared, and stronger-than-expected demand for housing and refurbishment work.

Even during the March Lockdown in the UK, ELAB was able to keep working to support our clients. You can rely on our team to be here for you and provide a quick turnaround on your samples.

ASBESTOS QUANTIFICATION SERVICE

ELAB’s UKAS schedule of accreditation includes the Quantification of Asbestos in soil, aggregates, and associated materials.

Quantification is undertaken in three main stages as detailed in the flow chart shown on the right (click to open). Most significantly ELAB are able to include the quantification of any free asbestos fibres present in the soil matrix.

To facilitate testing and in-line with best practice, ELAB now recommends a separate sample container containing at least 1 kg of material.

ELAB Fully Operational and Supporting Our Clients

Here at ELAB we have kept the doors open during the COVID crisis maintaining high levels of hygiene and safe social distancing within the workplace.

The construction industry is often seen as a weather gauge of the economy and is always keen to lead the way and increase productivity. A number of our clients have reopened sites after introducing new working practises including social distancing wherever practicable. In some cases, wearing masks and replacing gloves more often. Now even brickmakers are preparing to restart production on one of the vital raw materials of the Construction industry:

NEW ICP-MS DELIVERS ON LOWER LOD

Significant investment in the instrument laboratory will improve metal LODs and ELAB's accreditation scope. The latest Agilent ICP-MS with ISIS discrete sampling is now in the final stages of validation for soil and water matrices, improving limits of detection by up to ten times for many analytes. Increased precision will also allow more elements to meet strict MCERTS criteria.

ELAB has also taken the opportunity to align more closely with UKAS matrix definitions, allowing further additions to our accreditation schedules.
